Suchitoto is the second major city in the Department of Cuscatlán, in its vicinity was built the first village of San Salvador in 1528; known today as "The Old City" or "The Bermuda". Today, Suchitoto is known to national and international levels to be the only city that preserves naturally, its buildings with colonial style.  
 
Suchitoto, name of Nahuatl origin, recognizes since then its natural beauty, already in the translation in Spanish means: "Place of Flower Bird", maybe this is by its colourful, as well as the presence of numerous species of birds in the area.
 
This beautiful place was literally a ghost town during the Salvadoran war (1.980 to 1.992); the constant attacks from the Guazapa Volcano made that most of its inhabitants seek exile. Curiously this emigration was which helped the town to maintain its architectural style intact, because still retains this magical calm of the old times, narrow cobbled streets and adobe houses with forged balconies.  
 
Suchitlan Lake is one of the tourist attractions in Suchitoto, formed in 1973 as a result of the construction of the hydroelectric dam "Cerrón Grande" on the mainstream of Rio Lempa; the lake is home to many species of resident and migratory birds. The town hall of Suchitoto built a beautiful mall near the shores of Lake Suchitlán with the support of the Spanish Belgian cooperation and salvadorans living in the United States. Visit "La Isla de los Pájaros" (The Island of Birds) and "La Cueva del Ermitaño" (The Cave of the Hermit).
 
"El Salto Los Tercios" is a beautiful geological formation located at 2 kilometers east of the city, on the road that leads to "Cinquera", its interest lies in the spectacular composition of the vertical wall of the waterfall, formed by hex blocks arising from an outcropping magma and their respective and sharp cooling.  
 
Discover "El Salto Los Limones", a set of natural waterfalls where "Chalchigue" and "Los Amates" rivers converge.  
 
Guazapa volcano is the most important mountainous elevation in the Department of Cuscatlán, consists of a group of volcanic hills. It's view from Suchitoto is impressive.  
 
House Museum of Don Alejandro Coto: In 1991, when the Salvadoran civil war persisted and the area of Suchitoto was one of the most affected by the war, a small man of peace and culture emerged, promoting art as a method to counteract violence. To visit the house of this great man is a totally indescribable experience, you can see beautiful landscapes and appreciate the painting private collections, the fabulous library and discotheque, which will give another twist to your visit.

Alejandro Coto, a recognized salvadoran artist, musician, writer, and filmmaker, with his dedication and commitment has built piece to piece, one of the most important museums of El Salvador. Alejandro in an altruistic attitude donated his house with all the museum pieces to the Salvadoran State and the people of Suchitoto in 1999.

"El Teatro Las Ruinas" (The Ruins Theatre) has been built in one of the first three houses with tiles that existed in Suchitoto.

 
 
Architectural Set: The "Santa Lucia" church, was built in 1853 and it's the main historical monument and tourist attraction of Suchitoto, by its original structure and colonial concept. Suchitoto is a city was inhabited by people with great political influence in the country.

Suchitoto was highlighted as one of the three main indigo production zones at the time of the colony, which facilitated the accumulation of wealth, allowing the construction of large and luxurious houses.

The main cultural identityof Suchitoto is the heritage built which is even protected both at national and international levels; in case of other armed conflict.

 
"La Plaza Centenario": The square is a rendezvous for both the villagers and visitors. At the center, with a beautiful fountain designed by the salvadoran sculptor Julio Reyes.
 
Important holidays of Suchitoto: On February Suchitoto celebrates the Festival of Arts and Culture, with artistic performances. On July, the anniversary of the City and from December 6th to December 13th are the feasts in honour of Saint Lucia Virgin.

 

 

 
  Suchitoto is located about 47 km. of San Salvador, if you want to visit this beautiful place, take the road CA-1E and then the detour to Suchitoto.
